On October 10, 2024, Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), announced a temporary measures policy aimed at helping Indigenous Peoples in the United States reunite with their families in Canada—applications for these new measures opened on the same day.

Temporary Measures to Reunite Indigenous Families

Indigenous people whose family lives in Canada may be eligible for the new temporary measures. 

  • Eligible Indigenous people living in the US can apply to work or study in Canada while being exempt from certain requirements.
  • Indigenous people already residing in Canada can extend their stay for up to 3 years.

Applications Process

  1. Eligible U.S. Indigenous individuals must apply before traveling to Canada or may apply from within Canada if they are already in the country.
  2. Restrictions: Application cannot be submitted at the port of entry.
