On January 31, 2024, Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced an additional allocation of $362.4 million for the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP) during the 2023-2024 fiscal year. This is to alleviate exceptional pressures on interim housing caused by the rising numbers of asylum seekers.

Through IHAP, the Government of Canada provides funding to provincial and municipal governments on a cost-sharing basis. IHAP aims to alleviate exceptional pressures on interim housing caused by the rising numbers of asylum seekers.

Due to the rising number of asylum claimants, the federal government has decided to allocate extra funding in addition to the one-time $212 million provided to IHAP in July 2023. Quebec will receive $100 million from this additional funding.
